How it is counted
CJK characters are counted per character and English text per word (about 200 words per minute). Reading time = characters divided by the selected speed plus words divided by 200, while read-aloud time always uses 150 characters per minute. When Markdown is pasted, syntax markers such as #, ** and link targets are ignored first. Text and files are processed locally and never uploaded.

Word Count and Online Reading Time Calculator

Reading Time Calculator

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time is mainly estimated from the length of the text and reading speed. Chinese content is counted by characters, while English content is counted by words, and the selected reading speed is used to estimate the reading duration. The tool provides study, normal, and fast reading speeds, and also calculates read-aloud time separately.

How can I estimate how long an article will take to read?

Paste an article into the input box and the tool will automatically count characters, words, paragraphs, and sentences and update the results in real time. The default normal reading speed is 300 Chinese characters per minute. You can also switch to a study speed of 200 characters per minute or a fast speed of 500 characters per minute.

What is the difference between reading speeds?

Study mode is suitable for close reading, taking notes, or reviewing study materials. Normal mode is suitable for general article reading, while fast mode is suitable for skimming familiar content. Read-aloud time is estimated separately at about 150 characters per minute, making it more suitable for speeches, scripts, and oral presentation practice.

Daily reading goals

After setting the number of minutes you plan to read each day, the tool calculates approximately how much content you can read daily at the selected reading speed and estimates how many days are needed to finish the current article. This result can be used to create a reading plan and combined with the Study Time Calculator to organize daily study time.

Article difficulty reference

The tool provides a simple article difficulty reference based on average sentence length and the proportion of long sentences. This only reflects the complexity of sentence structure and does not represent the actual difficulty of the topic, vocabulary, or specialized knowledge, so it is best used as supporting information for reading-time estimates.

Support for TXT and Markdown files

In addition to pasting text directly, you can upload TXT or Markdown files or drag files into the input area. Markdown headings, links, code markers, and other formatting symbols are processed before counting so that syntax does not affect the word count. Files are read directly by the browser and do not need to be uploaded to a server.

When is a reading time estimate useful?

You can estimate reading or read-aloud time for articles, reports, paper abstracts, study materials, and speeches. When preparing a speech, read-aloud time can help control script length. When planning daily reading, the estimated completion period can help organize the reading schedule.

Frequently asked questions

Reading time is an estimate based on text length and the selected reading speed. It does not include time spent thinking, looking up information, taking notes, rereading, or pausing, so actual reading usually takes longer. Results are recalculated automatically when the text changes.

How long will it take to read this article?

Paste or upload an article to count its text length and estimate reading time at study, normal, or fast reading speeds. The tool also provides read-aloud time, daily reading goals, and estimated completion days.

  • Automatically count characters, words, paragraphs, and sentences to see article length at a glance
  • Support study, normal, and fast reading speeds for comparing different reading paces
  • Provide a separate read-aloud time estimate for speeches and oral practice
  • Set daily reading minutes to calculate daily reading volume and estimated completion days
  • Provide a simple article difficulty reference based on average sentence length and long-sentence ratio
  • Support text input, TXT, and Markdown files, with all content processed locally in the browser
