Credit-Weighted GPA Calculation and Grade Conversion
GPA Calculator
How Is GPA Calculated?
GPA (Grade Point Average) is usually calculated using a credit-weighted formula: multiply each course's grade points by its credits, add the weighted points for all courses, and divide the total by the sum of credits. The formula is: GPA = Σ (Course Grade Points × Course Credits) ÷ Σ Course Credits. Courses with more credits have a greater impact on your final GPA.
Supported Grade Entry Methods
The tool supports three grade entry methods: letter grades, percentage scores, and direct GPA entry. In letter grade mode, you can select grades such as A, A-, and B+. In percentage mode, enter a course score from 0 to 100, which is converted into grade points using the built-in scale for the selected grading system. In direct GPA mode, enter the grade points shown on your transcript. Available entry methods and conversion rules may vary by grading system, so check the instructions for the selected mode.
What Is the Difference Between 4.0, 4.3, and 5.0 Scales?
Different schools and education systems may use different GPA maximums and grade conversion rules. This tool provides three common reference scales: 4.0, 4.3, and 5.0. Each uses built-in letter-grade and percentage conversion tables. For example, on a 4.0 scale, both A and A+ may correspond to 4.0; on a 4.3 scale, A+ corresponds to 4.3; and the 5.0 scale uses its own grade-to-point mapping. Even schools using the same maximum GPA may apply different score ranges and grade standards. Results are estimates only. Always follow your school's official rules for formal purposes.
Why Do Course Credits Affect GPA?
GPA is not calculated by simply adding the grade points for every course and dividing by the number of courses. Instead, each course is weighted by its credits. For example, if a 4-credit course and a 1-credit course have the same grade points, the 4-credit course has four times the impact on the final GPA. When adding a course, enter both a valid grade and a credit value greater than zero.
How Are Semester GPA and Cumulative GPA Calculated?
Semester GPA usually includes only courses taken during a specific semester, while cumulative GPA combines courses completed across multiple semesters. To estimate your cumulative GPA, add all relevant courses and enter their grades and credits. You can include previously completed courses in the same calculation to obtain an overall credit-weighted result. Whether repeated courses, retakes, or courses excluded from GPA calculations should be omitted depends on your school's academic policies.
Can Percentage Scores Be Converted Directly to GPA?
Yes. Select percentage entry mode to convert percentage scores for reference. The tool uses the built-in score ranges for the selected grading scale to convert each percentage into grade points before calculating the credit-weighted GPA. Percentage scores can be used with the 4.0, 4.3, and 5.0 scales. In percentage-average mode, however, the tool calculates the credit-weighted average score directly without converting grades into GPA points. Schools, countries, and credential evaluation organizations may use different conversion standards, so there is no single percentage-to-GPA formula that applies everywhere. For university applications, credential evaluations, or scholarship documents, use the conversion rules published by the relevant institution.
How to View the Grade Conversion Table
The page provides percentage score ranges and reference grade points for the currently selected grading scale. The conversion table updates when you switch scales. The table is hidden when percentage-average mode is selected. Use it to understand how percentage scores correspond to grade points under the selected system, but do not treat it as a replacement for your school's official conversion standards.
How to Read the Results
When a GPA grading scale is selected, the result displays the GPA calculated using course credits as weights. With percentage entry, you can also view the credit-weighted average percentage score. When entering direct GPA points or letter grades, the GPA is the primary result. Percentage-average mode displays the weighted average score directly without GPA conversion. The course breakdown shows each course's grade, credits, and corresponding calculation details.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I leave the course name blank? Yes. Course names are only used in the result breakdown. However, every course included in the calculation must have a valid grade and a credit value greater than zero.
Can I calculate GPA for just one course? Yes. Add one course and enter its grade and credits.
Do I need to recalculate after changing a grade or credit value? No. Results update automatically when you change a course name, grade, or credit value.
Is my grade data uploaded? No. Course grades and credits are calculated locally in your browser. The selected grading scale, entry method, and course draft are saved in the current browser so you can continue after refreshing the page.
