How it is counted
Effective count = Chinese characters plus English words (punctuation and spaces excluded). Total characters is every non-space character. Paragraphs are split by blank lines and sentences by end punctuation. Writing hints only summarise the statistics and never grade the content. Everything is processed and saved in this browser.

Word Count, Paragraphs, Sentences and Reading Time

Essay Statistics Tool

This essay statistics tool calculates the word count and structural details of essays, papers, book reports and other articles in real time. Enter or import text to see the number of Chinese characters, English words, effective words, total characters, paragraphs and sentences, as well as estimated reading time. You can also set a word count target, check your writing progress and get basic structural suggestions based on paragraph count and average sentence length.

What is the difference between effective word count and total characters?

The tool reports effective word count and total characters separately. Effective word count is the sum of Chinese characters and English words, and is used to calculate progress toward your target. Total characters represents the number of characters in the text being analyzed. Chinese characters and English words are also displayed separately, making it easier to review texts that mix the two languages. Schools, exams and academic guidelines may use different counting rules, so always follow the specific requirements that apply to your work.

How do I set an essay word count target?

The default target is 800 words. You can also choose preset targets such as 400, 1,000 or 1,500, or enter a custom number. The page calculates the percentage of your target completed based on the current effective word count and shows how many words remain. If you exceed the target, it displays the amount over the limit. Statistics and progress update immediately whenever you change the target.

How are Chinese characters and English words counted?

The tool counts Chinese characters and English words separately, then adds the two figures together to calculate the effective word count. For essays, course reports and technical articles containing both languages, you can review the amount of Chinese and English content independently instead of relying only on the total character count.

Why are paragraph and sentence counts useful?

The paragraph count helps you check whether your text is divided into appropriate sections. The sentence count and average sentence length can help identify writing that may be too wordy. The tool provides basic suggestions based on simple rules: when the effective word count reaches 600 but the text has fewer than three paragraphs, it suggests adding paragraph breaks; when the average sentence length exceeds 40 characters, it suggests reviewing and splitting long sentences. These suggestions are intended as writing aids and do not represent an automated assessment of writing quality.

How is estimated reading time calculated?

Reading time is estimated separately for Chinese characters and English words, using 300 Chinese characters per minute and 200 English words per minute, then combining the results to estimate the total time. This can help estimate the approximate reading time for essays, speeches, book reports and other reading materials. Actual reading speed depends on text difficulty, reading habits and individual proficiency, so the result is only an estimate.

How do I import TXT and Markdown files?

In addition to pasting text directly, you can select a TXT or Markdown file, or drag and drop a file into the input area. Before counting, some Markdown formatting syntax is removed, including heading symbols, quote markers, list markers, bold and italic markers, link addresses and code fences. This helps reduce the effect of formatting syntax on the word count. Statistics are calculated from the processed text, not the original character count of the Markdown source file.

Is essay content saved automatically?

Yes. The tool automatically saves your text and target word count in your browser's local storage, so you can continue writing when you reopen the page. Your saved content is not immediately lost when you refresh the page. Click the Clear button to remove the current text and its locally saved data. Local saving depends on browser data, so your content may not be recoverable if you clear site data or switch devices.

Can I copy the essay statistics?

Yes. After entering text, click the Copy Statistics button to copy the effective word count, Chinese character count, English word count, total characters, paragraph count, sentence count, estimated reading time and target completion progress. You can use the results to record your writing progress or prepare study reports.

No. Statistics update automatically when you enter text or change the target word count.

Why is the effective word count different from the total character count?

Effective word count is the sum of Chinese characters and English words, while total characters is a separate measurement. They use different counting rules, so the values may differ.

Does the result match the word count used by my school or exam?

Not necessarily. Exams, schools and academic guidelines may apply different rules to punctuation, spaces, numbers, English words and headings. This tool provides reference statistics for writing checks. Follow the specific requirements before submitting your work.
