Many tasks need only a single frame instead of an entire video: creating video covers, adding images to tutorials, saving key slides from meeting recordings, or organizing video material. This tool lets you open a local video directly in your browser, find the target frame on the timeline, and export it as an image without installing editing software or uploading the video.
First, drag a video into the upload area or select one from your device. The page reads the file name, size, resolution, and duration, then displays the player. Second, play the video or drag the timeline to the target position. The timeline shows the current timecode in real time. Third, select the image format and quality, then click “Capture Current Frame”. The captured image and download button appear below.
PNG is lossless and is suitable for detailed scenes, gradients, software interfaces, charts, and text-heavy frames, but the files are usually larger. JPG produces smaller files and is suitable for realistic scenes and photographic content; its quality can be adjusted, with 90 being a good default. WebP is usually smaller than JPG at similar quality and is supported by modern browsers and major platforms. All three formats are exported at the video’s original resolution, so the display size on the page does not reduce image quality.
Frame capture depends on browser decoding support. A video that the browser can play normally can generally be captured. If the video uses a codec the browser cannot decode, such as certain protected files or unusual MKV encodings, the player may fail to play it. In that case, convert the video to MP4 first and then return to this tool. Before capturing, make sure the frame has actually been decoded and displayed.
The timeline supports millisecond timecodes, but the actual image is still determined by video frames. For example, a 30 fps video produces roughly one frame every 33 milliseconds, so 00:00:00.010 and 00:00:00.020 may produce the same frame. Dragging the timeline moves the player to the corresponding position and displays that frame. For finer adjustment, use “Previous Frame” and “Next Frame”, or adjust by ±0.1 seconds or ±1 second. You can also enter a timecode directly. When exporting, the browser draws the current video frame to a Canvas and exports it as JPG, PNG, or WebP without resizing.
Create video covers and thumbnails; add screenshots to tutorials, documents, and presentations; save slides or key screens from course recordings; extract composition references from video material; prepare a first frame for short videos; and archive important pages from meeting recordings. All processing is performed locally on your device, and video content never leaves the browser.
This tool does not use server-side video transcoding. The video is read locally through the browser file interface, decoded by the browser, and captured locally on a Canvas. When the page is closed or refreshed, the page releases its file reference. The video is not uploaded or stored on the server, and no registration or login is required.
