A short animated GIF can be easier to share than a video: there is no play button, it loops automatically, and its size can be controlled. This tool opens your local video directly in the browser, lets you select the part you want, and generates a GIF without installing software or uploading the video.

Three Steps to Create a GIF

First, drag a video into the upload area or click to select one. The page reads the file information and duration. Second, drag the two timeline handles or enter a time such as 00:00:05.000 to select the clip. You can also play the video to the desired position and use the current playback position to set a point quickly. Third, choose a preset or customize the parameters, then click Generate GIF. How to Choose a Preset

Social Sharing uses a width of 480 px, 12 frames per second, and 128 colors. It is suitable for messaging apps and social platforms, with a good balance between size and clarity. Small GIF uses 320 px width, 10 frames per second, and 64 colors to prioritize a smaller file size, making it suitable for memes and simple animations. HD GIF uses 800 px width, 15 frames per second, and 256 colors for more detailed images, but the file can be significantly larger. With Custom selected, width, frame rate, and quality can be adjusted independently.

Why GIF Files Get Large So Easily

GIF is a format introduced in 1987. It uses frame-by-frame palette compression and supports at most 256 colors. Unlike modern video codecs, it does not use inter-frame prediction for efficient compression. As a result, file size is roughly proportional to resolution, frame rate, and duration. Doubling any one of these factors can roughly double the file size. This is why the tool warns about clips longer than 15 seconds: long GIFs can easily reach tens of megabytes, making them slow to send and load. Shortening the clip is often more effective than reducing quality.

The Relationship Between Width, Frame Rate, and Quality

Width should usually be the first setting to adjust. Reducing the width from 800 px to 480 px reduces the number of pixels by about 64%, often cutting the file size substantially while making little visible difference in a chat window. Frame rate is the next consideration: 10 to 15 frames per second is common for GIFs, and reducing 15 fps to 10 fps can save roughly one third of the frame data. Quality controls the number of palette colors and dithering method. 64 colors produces the smallest files but may show banding in gradients, 128 colors is a general-purpose choice, and 256 colors provides the most detail. The estimated file size is shown before generation so you can find a suitable combination.

About Looping

GIFs are generated with infinite looping by default, which is suitable for memes and demonstrations. Disable Infinite Looping if you want the GIF to play only once. The loop setting is stored in the GIF file and is supported by major browsers, messaging apps, and image viewers.
