Mean, median, mode, extremes, and range
How to calculate an average: mean, median, and mode together
The arithmetic mean is the sum of all values divided by the number of values. It is one of the most common measures of central tendency, but extreme values can pull it away from the typical value, so it is often useful to examine the median as well.
This tool calculates eight results at once: count, sum, mean, median, mode, maximum, minimum, and range. Enter one number per line, or separate numbers with commas or spaces. You can paste a column of grades or statistical data directly. Everything is calculated locally in the browser.
What do mean, median, and mode tell you?
The mean represents the overall level but can be affected by extreme values. The median is the middle value after sorting and is less affected by extremes. The mode is the value that occurs most often and is useful for identifying common values. Looking at all three helps reveal whether data is skewed.
How is the median calculated?
Sort the data from smallest to largest. If there is an odd number of values, take the middle value. For 85, 92, 78, 96, 88, the sorted data is 78, 85, 88, 92, 96 and the median is 88. With an even number of values, take the average of the two middle values, so the median of 1, 2, 3, 4 is 2.5.
What happens when there is no mode?
If every value occurs only once, there is no mode and the calculator explicitly displays that result. If several values are tied for the highest frequency, all of them are listed. For example, the modes of 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4 are 2 and 3.
What is the relationship between range, maximum, and minimum?
The range equals the maximum minus the minimum and provides a simple measure of spread. For data from 78 to 96, the range is 18. Because the range depends only on the two extreme values, it can be strongly affected by outliers.
What input formats are supported?
Numbers can be separated by line breaks, commas, semicolons, or spaces. You can paste a column from a spreadsheet directly. Invalid content produces a clear message instead of being silently ignored. Decimals and negative numbers are supported as well.
Is the data uploaded?
No. Parsing and statistical calculations are performed entirely in the browser without sending the entered data to the server. Grades, sales figures, and experimental data remain on your device.
What statistics does the average calculator provide? Why also check median and mode
- Get count, sum, mean, median, mode, maximum, minimum, and range in one calculation
- Enter one number per line or separate values with commas or spaces; the mean of 85, 92, 78, 96, 88 is 87.8
- The median is calculated after sorting; with an even number of values, the two middle values are averaged, so 1, 2, 3, 4 gives 2.5
- All values tied for the highest frequency are listed as modes; if no value repeats, the result clearly shows that there is no mode
- Range equals maximum minus minimum; the range from 78 to 96 is 18
- All calculations run locally in the browser and pasted data is never uploaded
