How to calculate percentages: four modes for common percentage problems

Percentage calculations describe the relationship between two numbers as a percentage. Four common questions correspond to the four modes in this calculator.

Select the problem type with the tabs, enter the numbers, and calculate. The result area shows both the answer and the calculation formula, making it easier to verify results or use them in assignments and reports. All calculations are performed locally in your browser, and the numbers you enter are not uploaded.

How do you calculate a percentage of a number?

Multiply the value by the percentage and divide by 100. For example, 20% of 500 is 500 × 20 ÷ 100 = 100. This mode is useful for calculating discounts, commissions, taxes, and the numerical value of a growth rate. Percentages can be entered as integers or decimals such as 12.5.

What percentage is one number of another?

Divide the part by the total and multiply by 100. For example, 100 is 20% of 500. If the part is greater than the total, the result can exceed 100%; for example, 500 is 500% of 100. A total of zero is invalid because the percentage cannot be calculated.

How do you increase or decrease a value by a percentage?

Calculate the percentage change first, then add or subtract it from the original value. Increasing 500 by 20% gives 600, while decreasing 500 by 20% gives 400. Increasing and then decreasing by the same percentage does not return to the original value: 500 increased by 20% becomes 600, then decreased by 20% becomes 480, because the second calculation uses a different base.

What is the difference between percentage change and percentage difference?

Percentage change compares the difference between a new value and an original value with the original value, then expresses the result as a percentage. From 500 to 600, the result is positive 20%. Percentage difference is generally used when comparing two values without treating either one as the directional starting value. This calculator uses the absolute value of a negative original value as the denominator in its percentage-change mode.

Why is the calculation formula shown with the result?

The result area displays a complete formula for the selected mode, such as 500 × 20% = 100 or (600 − 500) ÷ 500 × 100% = 20%. The formula can be copied into documents and makes it easier to check input values, especially when reviewing report data.

Are the values entered into the calculator uploaded?

No. All four calculation modes run in the browser and do not send the entered values to the server. Amounts, sales figures, and percentages are not uploaded or stored. For splitting a total according to a ratio, use the ratio calculator.

What are the four ways to use a percentage calculator?

Most percentage problems fall into four categories: finding a percentage value, finding what percentage one value is of another, calculating a percentage increase or decrease, and calculating percentage change. This calculator combines all four modes on one page.
  • Find the percentage value directly, such as 20% of 500 = 100
  • Calculate what percentage one number represents of another, such as 100 of 500 = 20%
  • Increase or decrease a value by a percentage, such as 500 increased by 20% = 600 or decreased by 20% = 400
  • Calculate percentage change between old and new values, such as a change from 500 to 600 = +20%
  • Show the calculation formula, such as 500 × 20% = 100, for easier checking and explanation
  • Perform all calculations locally in the browser without uploading input data, with results available for copying
Use the ratio calculator when you need to divide a total according to a ratio, or the fraction calculator when you need to work with fractions and decimal conversions.
