Online JSON Escape Tool (JSON Escape / Unescape / Unicode)

When off, Chinese and other non-ASCII characters are kept as they are and the output is shorter.
Also turns < > and & into forms like \u003c, for pasting the result into HTML pages or inline scripts.
Every conversion runs locally in your browser. Your input is never uploaded to any server and no account is required.

Online JSON Escape Tool (JSON Escape / Unescape / Unicode): Escape Quotes and Backslashes, Optionally Convert to Unicode, and Validate JSON

How does the JSON escape tool work? Safely place JSON inside another layer of JSON

A JSON escape tool converts quotes, backslashes, newlines, and other special characters in JSON text into escape sequences, or restores those sequences to their original form.

Paste your content and choose Escape or Unescape. You can also validate whether the JSON is syntactically valid. All processing takes place locally in the browser.

When must JSON escaping be used?

When one JSON document must be stored as a string inside another JSON field, such as a payload field, log field, or message body, quotes inside the nested JSON must be escaped. Otherwise, the outer parser may terminate the string at the first unescaped quote, resulting in malformed structure or missing fields. The same principle applies when storing JSON in CSV files, configuration files, or SQL statements.

Another common case is inserting user input into a JSON string. If quotes and backslashes are not escaped, the result may fail to parse or, worse, alter the data structure so that text becomes additional fields. Whenever a string contains another string, escape the inner content before constructing the outer value.

Which characters actually need escaping?

They include double quotes, backslashes, newlines, carriage returns, tabs, and control characters below 0x20. Chinese characters, Emoji, and other printable characters do not need to be escaped in modern JSON and can be stored directly as UTF-8. Non-ASCII characters should be converted to backslash-u escapes only when pure ASCII transport or compatibility with legacy systems is required.

Are Unicode escapes and JSON escaping the same thing?

Not exactly. A Unicode escape changes a character into a code-point representation and operates at the character representation level. JSON escaping adds backslashes to characters that would otherwise interfere with JSON syntax. In practice, the two techniques may be combined: first perform syntax escaping, then optionally convert non-ASCII characters into Unicode escapes. The tool keeps these operations separate so you can control the level of escaping.

Why does unescaping fail?

Three common causes are an isolated backslash or invalid escape sequence, applying unescape a second time after the content has already been parsed by an outer layer, and unescaped newlines being mixed into text that is processed line by line. When an error occurs, validate the input first to locate the problem and then decide whether to repair the escape sequence or unescape it.

Can validation and escaping be used together?

Yes, but the order matters. Validate the complete JSON structure first, then escape it. If you escape it before validation, the outer parser sees a string rather than a JSON object, so the validation result may not match what you expect. The tool provides validation and escaping as separate operations to avoid confusing valid JSON with a valid JSON string.

Does escaping prevent XSS?

It is only one layer of protection. Escaping angle brackets and ampersands can reduce the risk of content being interpreted as HTML when inserted into a page, but proper XSS protection depends on server-side output encoding and content security policies. Escaping here primarily ensures that data remains intact during transmission and storage.

How should nested JSON be escaped without breaking its syntax?

When JSON needs to be stored as a string inside another JSON document, quotes inside the nested JSON must be escaped. Otherwise, the outer parser can terminate the string at the first quote, resulting in missing fields or a syntax error. This tool handles quotes, backslashes, newlines, carriage returns, and tabs according to JSON syntax rules and can optionally convert non-ASCII characters into Unicode escapes.

Escaping, unescaping, and syntax validation are separate operations so that valid JSON is not confused with a valid JSON string.

  • Escaping covers double quotes, backslashes, newlines, carriage returns, tabs, and control characters below 0x20.
  • Chinese and other non-ASCII characters can optionally be converted to Unicode escapes for pure ASCII transport and legacy system compatibility.
  • Unescaping restores escaped quotes and newlines to readable JSON text.
  • Built-in JSON syntax validation reports the error position, making it easier to locate problems before choosing the escape direction.
  • Angle brackets and ampersands can optionally be escaped to reduce the risk of content being interpreted as HTML.
  • All processing runs locally in the browser, your input is not uploaded to the server, and no registration is required.
For JSON formatting and minification, use the JSON formatter. For text-level Base64 and URL encoding, use the text encoding converter.
